What's In a Name?

We were tagged a bit ago for this meme (thanks, Pepper Scraps!), and today seems like a good day to play along, so here we go...

1. Do you have any cultural or religious naming traditions?

Not really. My husband is South African, and I have a Canadian background, so we probably had a larger range of names we were familiar with between the two of us. But we weren't specifically trying to follow any traditions.

As it turned out, both first and middle names have French origins. The first is fairly common in South Africa (so it represents her father's heritage), and the middle is my middle name and my aunt's name - and the middle name of one of my nieces (representing my side).

2. Did you or your partner come to the marriage with pre-selected names?

My husband wanted to use his name if it was a boy. I honestly never thought he was dead serious about it until we really had to start deciding on a name. His name has been passed down several generations so has significant meaning to him.

I personally liked the name "Celina" for a girl and probably would have gone with it if he had been more enthusiastic about the idea. But obviously I was adaptable!

3. Did you consider the sound of the first and middle and last names together?Did this make any sad eliminations?

Absolutely! After we chose the first name, I considered "Celina" for a middle name, but it just didn't sound right to me. "Delina" sounded better, but my husband used his veto power on that. "Renée" was my next choice simply because I liked the way it went with the first name - and we ALMOST went with that...

In the end, I think we went with my middle name in part so if we ever had a boy, my husband would feel it was fair play to name the baby after himself.

4. Did you have veto powers?

Theoretically, yes! But I think if either of us felt very strongly about a name, then the other would not veto it.

5. Did the baby naming cause arguments?

Not really. We were both fairly flexible once we knew it was a girl. My husband brought up the first name in one of our baby name discussions. I researched it, decided I really liked it, and made the decision to stick with it. He questioned me a few times as to whether I was sure about it, and since I was, he was happy with it.

6. Do you think it is easier to name boys or girls?

Probably a boy, since my husband has the name all picked out already!

7. Did you eliminate names because of people from your past or present who you don’t like or because a certain image comes to mind.

Uh huh! There weren't any specific names I eliminated, but I really wanted a name that WASN'T the name of someone I knew. Partially just to be politically correct and not offend anyone whose name we didn't use, and and partially because I didn't want any predetermined images coming to mind... All ex's and old crushes were out, of course

8. Did you / would you survey your children to get their thoughts on the name?

Absolutely! I'm hoping she'll appreciate her name when she is older, but either way, I'd love to know what she thinks.

9. Did you tell people the name or possible names before the baby was born or were they “in the vault”?

Yes - on the first name. And I would never do that again. As long as the baby's name is not official yet, people will try to convince you not to use it or offer "better" suggestions. Once it's official, they either tell you they like it, or they keep their mouths shut.

It's hard enough to come up with a name between my husband and I; it's even harder when people's reactions make us second-guess our choices.

10. Did you use baby name books?

No, but I did check out a lot of baby name sites online. I was looking for several things - I wanted a name that sounded pretty. And had a meaningful meaning (the first is "loved," the middle is "shining light").

And I wanted a name that was obviously a name (no Medicines or Sugars or completely made-up names or names where no one can figure out the spelling), but also was nowhere on or near the top 100 list. My daughter is unique, and I wanted her name to reflect that without being totally odd!

Drumroll Please…What did you name your kid(s)?

Esmé Elaine

That "Mozi" thing? That is nowhere on the birth certificate. It was just used for her MySpace site as an abbreviation for Mozambique, since that's where we were when I set it up. So it's carried over to the blog, too... It kind of grows on you.

And consider yourselves all tagged if you'd like to play along...

Party Time!

Ultimate Blog Party 2009

I heard about this Ultimate Blog Party going on, so I thought I'd put on my animal masks and join the fun. Grrrrrrr!
Ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo!

Boy, this is fun! Now while I have your attention, let me perform my favorite song...

Tinkle tinkle little star,
How are you up 'dere?

I don't know the rest of the words yet, but I'll have them downpat in exactly two weeks, when I'll be TWO YEARS OLD!

Yep, it's gonna be another party time in this house! I'm still trying to figure out what I should do to entertain everyone - let me know if you have suggestions. If you haven't seen it yet, here is a skateboard video clip from my first birthday party:

While we're having fun, let me just remind you all of the Operation Love Zimbabwe book giveaway that is still open! If we get enough comments, one winner will get to choose from three different books.
And remember that if you shop online this month, you can help raise money to support our Zimbabwean orphans. Shop at Amazon.com, eBay, and many more popular online stores! A percentage of all purchases made through The Link Mosaic charity mall during the month of March will be donated to our orphans.
If you like reading, here's another giveaway you might be interested in: the book If Tomorrow Never Comes by Marlo Schalesky. This looks like a terrific Christian fiction book - Mommy is hoping she wins! Go to The Mommy...etc to sign up for this giveaway.
Let's see - one more thing to do before we sign off... My friend Ebi-kun's mommy tagged us in a meme:

This is what you need to do. Write a review of any kids product, it can be a toy, a book or anything which you have personally used. Pass this meme to five other blogger friends.

So here's one of my favorite things - my dry erase board!
I love to make funny faces and eyes and erase them quick before anybody else can see them!

My particular board is a sloped table with numbers at the top and letters at the bottom. I like to color the letters and numbers! We got it at Big Lots for $19.99. It's not the sturdiest construction, Mommy says, but it comes with a chair just my size and it works fine for me!

One thing to be careful of - most dry erase markers are NOT washable! They come off great when you write on the table, but not so great when you write on the walls. We've got a touch up paint job in our immediate future! I've been practicing my painting so I can help with the touch up.

So if you'd like to play along with this kid product meme, consider yourselves tagged:
  1. Here to There
  2. Teacher Turned Mommy...
  3. The Laughs Will Go On...
  4. Baby Tea Leaves
  5. Random Thoughts
So there you go! Party on, folks...
I've got my monkey mask on and I'm off to practice my monkey actions with the folks at church. Have a blessed weekend!
EDIT: I forgot to include my top party prize wish list! I'm still working on it - the list is sooo long, and there are so many to choose from!
Here are the top 3 at the moment:
#125 - Mommy & Toddler Gift Basket set from Seven Dogs & a Baby
#71 - Flip flops for Mom & Daughter from Top It Off
#9 - Crayon Apron from Kennedy Grace
But I have lots of other favorites: All the Target certificates (#19, 21, 22, 26, 91), the toddler apron (#28), the fuzzy monkey headphones (#47), surprise art supplies (#56), Pepsi tote full of loot (#60), Christian Book Distributors certificate (#68), Glitterful felt stories certificate (#104), Office Max certificate (#113), Old Navy certificate (#118), Minkee toddler pillow (#122).
And I certainly wouldn't mind winning #1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 30, 32, 38, 39, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 55, 64, 65, 69, 72, 74, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 84, 87, 92, 95, 98, 103, 105, 106, 108, 109, 111, 114, 115, 119, 120, 126, 130, 127, 132, 133
And INTL1, INTL3, INTL6, INTL18, INTL23, INTL28, INTL29, INTL 30, INTL31, INTL33, INTL35, INTL36, INTL45, INT61, USC15, USC30, USC34, USC40, USC42, USC45, USC47, USC50, USC52, USC56, USC58, USC59, USC62, USC64, USC65, USC73
In fact, I'd take anything that's appropriate for someone who's gonna be 2 years old in two weeks! Or anything that would pamper Mommy, too.
Sorry if I'm sounding a little greedy! But it's almost my birthday, so I'm supposed to say what I want, right?...

Seven Factoids

I have been having lots of fun filling up my water bucket in the pool and watering all of Ouma's plants. And watering my shoes. And watering Daddy's feet.

It's been a while since we talked about Operation Love Zimbabwe. We are still planning a 2-week giveaway to inform blog readers everywhere about the tragedies that are taking place in Zimbabwe - like the cholera epidemic that has killed 1,000 or so people already. And we want to let them know how they can help.

We've got a couple of guest posts about Zimbabwe lined up and lots of great gifts, too. We can't wait to start giving them away! Of course, we are always looking for more...

And we're having to move up the date a little. Cuz we are going to Zimbabwe ourselves now, you see. Right at the beginning of February. To run an orphanage and farm there. So we'll have to get this giveaway underway and done before then so we can make sure everything gets shipped out in time. This operation's now planned for January 18-31st. We'll give you more details as the time gets closer.

Once again, thanks for everyone who has helped keep this blog going with guest posts this month! You are all very much appreciated.

Just wanted to share a few photos of some of my crazy stunts while we were packing things up in Mozambique...

And we're still catching up on some memes and awards. Thanks to Simply Stork for this 7 factoids meme. So here are 7 factoids about us:
  1. We like to read. Both of us. My favorite book at the moment is Happy Birthday, Moon. I love how the moon talks back by echoing everything Bear says. And Mommy is currently trying to make it through Turnbull by Agnes Sligh.
  2. I was born in the water. But I don't like getting my face wet. Though I do love the ocean and swimming in the pool. Mommy doesn't mind getting her face wet, but she doesn't like deep water at all.
  3. Our toenails are red. Except mine look a little messy, and one of Mommy's toenails is quite smudged from when I stepped on her foot while the polish was still wet. I LOVE red toenails now!
  4. We like listening to Christmas music! I sing along to "Away in a Manger." Mommy's favorite at the moment is "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" by Casting Crowns. And we both like Boney M's "Mary's Boy Child." Oh, and I really like Charlotte Church's Christmas CD. And my cousin says studies on mice show that 75% have an increase in brain function after being subjected to Christmas music continuously for a month.
  5. We like berry flavored lip gloss! My Mozambique cousins got me started on lip gloss, and I am quite good at putting it all over my chin now. But Mommy puts hers on for me so it goes directly on my lips instead of my chin. I like smacking and licking my lips!
  6. We don't go to bed on time at nights. Here it is 11:38 p.m. right now.
  7. We ate lemon popsicles for supper tonight. I love popsicles! Especially after running around outside flapping my arms in the wind and spinning in circles. And then I got a bubble bath afterwards to get all the stickiness off.
And we are hereby tagging the following:
  1. Give Me a Second To Think About It...
  2. Ma Vie Follie
  3. Somebody Loved
  4. See Kori Rant
  5. The Laughs Will Go On...
  6. If Mom Says OK
Tag! you're it...please tell us more about yourselves if you don't mind :o)
This is how it works.
  1. Link to the person who tagged you.
  2. Post the rules on your blog (copy and paste 1-6)
  3. Write 7 random things about yourself.
  4. Tag 6 people at the end of your post and link to them.
  5. Let each person know they have been tagged and leave a comment on their blog.
  6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up.

Parenting

We went to the beach yesterday and I had lots of fun boogie boarding and jumping the waves with Daddy! It was cold but so fun, I didn't mind at all!
I did hurt my elbow, so I've been saying owie a lot and crying and not doing anything with my right arm. But this morning I was back to picking up the cat and dragging her around the house. We went to the doctor and waited in his office for 1 1/2 hours (where I threw my bottle around and blocked the front door and insisted horses were donkeys), and he said there was really nothing wrong (something about dislocating the elbow but not really a dislocation that should be better by itself in another day or so), so I can't manipulate my parents too much anymore.
Thanks to The Mommy...Etc for tagging us on this meme!
Here goes...The Family Photo comes first:
1. How many kids? One
2. Ages? Esmé is 20 months.
3. What time does our day start? Since we are on holiday with no regular routine, this is a great question that I'd love the answer to! Usually somewhere between 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
4. Breakfast? A few spoons of oatmeal, a few bites of a hot cross bun, a grape and a half, and maybe some dry cat food.
5. Does she watch TV? We didn't have it while in Mozambique, but she watched her Barney DVD over and over and over and over, plus some other DVDs and short online videos at from totlol.com. And now we're getting acquainted with South African television...
6. Favorite activities? Watching Barney, going to the beach, playing with Barbies and other babies, naming objects and things in pictures, coloring/painting/cutting/writing, washing dishes and sweeping and otherwise "helping" in the kitchen, skateboarding, and doing tricks with her Daddy.
7. Do I get a break during the day from Esmé? Who needs a break??? Well, not at the moment. Except for naptime, I guess... If I'm lucky, that is about 3 hours. In Mozambique Ms. Cathrine watched Esmé in the mornings for about 3 hours, too, so I could get my Maranatha work done.
8. How do we end our day? Depends on if Esmé is crashing yet or not, seeing as we're not on a regular routine at the moment. If she's doing okay, it's bathtime, medicine and toothbrush and lotion and brush and jammies, and then reading a few books (or maybe the same book over and over). I always include at least one Bible story and usually limit it to 5 books. Then a short prayer and I nurse her (still, yes, I know). If all goes well, she falls asleep, otherwise I lie next to her for hours singing to her and trying to keep her laying down on her bed.
9. Best parenting advice/tips? Please, give me some! I don't feel wise enough to pass any on at this stage! I guess I've got advice for newborns, and after we pass through the terrible twos maybe I'll be able to pass on some advice for this stage. Hindsight is 20/20 and all...
10. PASS IT ON: Z's Mom, MessyFunMommyLife, Grasping for Objectivity, Teaching Tinytots, and Here to There.

Fabulous Five

Daddy burnt his leg a week or so ago.

So this is me showing my empathy for him and wearing a bandage in his honor. As you can see, I'm blue-blooded.

Actually, it has nothing to do with empathy. I'm just upset because he won't let me put my Barney DVD into his computer. I don't get it. It's not like he's doing anything exciting on it.

So I am writing a letter to Barney in hopes that Barney will intervene on my behalf.

Problem: I only got three pennies to pay for postage, which means the letter's not gonna get far. (My allowance sucks. Maybe Barney will help with that, too.) Please help! It's imperative that I get this letter to Barney!

Quirks

After all the applause I got for my white-on-white outfit selection, I thought I'd share some other fashion successes of mine.

Don't the shoes just make this outfit? I could be a model!

And this hairstyle is just the ticket to success! All my own look (with a little help from naptime - notice the sleepy-eyes).

We have been too busy enjoying the moments to stay up on the blogging - sorry about that, friends! The past few nights I've been wide awake until after 10 p.m., and Mommy decided to have fun with me instead of getting upset with me. We've been dancing to music, reading books by cell phone light, telling stories, singing songs, and playing with purses and giraffes and dolls and stacker cups in bed.

But we still have some memes to catch up on, so we'll get right to it tonight. We were tagged by I Am Boymom for the 6 quirky things meme. So first I'll give you six quirky things about me, and then Mommy will give you six quirky things about her. Two for the price of one, eh?
Here are mine:
  1. My belly button is definitely my favorite body part!
  2. I think food tastes better after it has been dumped off my plate onto my high chair tray.
  3. I have this thing about mixing foods. If you give me separate bowls for different foods, I will make sure there is some of each food in each bowl. Even if it means soggy popcorn and crunchy mangoes.
  4. I am super organized. I think stickers belong right on top of each other. So give me a bunch of stickers, and instead of putting them all over the page, I'll pile them all up. Much neater that way.
  5. I think napkins are far tastier than most other foods.
  6. I love shoes. I like putting them on and bringing them to other people to put on. Size and left/right is irrelevant.
And here are Mommy's. She had a really hard time with this, because she doesn't think she is quirky at all, so I had to help her.
  1. She mutters to herself, especially when she is frustrated with things like slow internet.
  2. She writes lots of lists. If it's not on the list, it doesn't get done. And if it's at the bottom of the list, it never gets done, either. But she's always happiest when she has a list to work from.
  3. Sometimes she hates to cook and can't even stand being in the kitchen. But sometimes she really loves to cook and makes enough food for several armies.
  4. She gets sick and tired of Barney after hearing the whole DVD 10 times in two days. I don't understand that one at all.
  5. She measures her breakfast cereal and milk in the morning with a measuring cup. As if she starts the day off right, she'll lose two pounds for the day. Or the week. Or the month. She can always hope.
  6. Movies put her to sleep. Every time. Even the great ones, like Milo & Otis.
Oh, I forgot to tell you the rules. Here they are:
  1. Link to the person who tagged you.
  2. Post the rules on your blog.
  3. List 6 unspectacular quirks you have
  4. Tag 6 bloggers by linking them.
  5. Leave a comment on each taggee's blog to let them know they've been tagged.
So here are the tags - the first 6 commenters on my last post. Play along if you'd like...
  1. IMom
  2. La Donna Welter
  3. Somebody Loved
  4. Beanish & Other Languages I'm Learning
  5. Momma's Gone Over the Wall
  6. Expectantly Waiting

Fourth Folder, Fourth Photo

As I mentioned yesterday, we're catching up on memes and awards this week, and I decided to do an easy one today! Celita at The Spices of Life tagged us for this meme. All you have to do is go into your fourth folder and post the fourth picture... So here it is!

This is me with my favorite baby doll just after I turned one. Ms. Catherine helped me tie her on my back with a blanket.

Grandma bought this doll for me from Salvation Army while I was still in Mommy's tummy. She said "Mama" and cried and laughed, but she doesn't say anything anymore. Maybe cuz the battery is dead, or maybe cuz I've put her in the washing bucket too many times. I don't know.
But I still take care of her and feed her and sing to her and rock her and color on her head with my markers and take her clothes off.

We're tagging the first four people to comment on our last non-award post. So if you choose to play along, you are:
  1. Beanish and Other Languages I'm Learning.
  2. Damselfly at Growing a Life.
  3. Tara at If Mom Says OK.
  4. Brynna at Taking Up My Cross.
We've been busy today! We're on Ps for crafts still - we'll tell you all about it. You can NEVER run out of things to do on "P"! And "packing" is on the list. We went through all my clothes and sorted out what I get to wear right now, what I can pack away for later, and what I can give away. I was VERY helpful - trying on all the clothes and putting them in random piles!

Random Things

Esmé's Mommy here.
Prayers requested for Mavinga, our gardener’s 4-year-old son. He was sick with a fever, and his dad took him to the hospital on Friday. Things so quickly take a turn for the worse in this country – it seems kids we know are dying all the time – and I would hate to see anything tragic happen to this beautiful kid.
Yesterday my sister and two friends got mugged while walking on the Maputo beach. In broad daylight. With other people around. There were no serious injuries and all property was recovered, but it was scary to realize how vulnerable we are here.
On a more positive note – my niece turned 14 yesterday. Here we are at a girls’ night in her honor – watching movies with popcorn and pizza and cake nearby. And my other niece here (who is turning 10 today) gives the most wonderful back massages!
I’ve got a couple of memes to play. Today we’ll start with a simple one since I don’t feel like thinking hard (must be all the chocolate). This one comes from Celita at The Spices of Life: Five random things about myself:
  1. Gouda is my new favorite cheese. Sorry, cheddar boy!
  2. I’m looking at a heart-shaped bruise on my leg – very romantic blues and yellows. Last week Esmé fell off her bed at a chalet we were staying at, and in my rush to get to her, I ran into the corner of our bed.
  3. I ate chocolate ProNutro for breakfast, along with my hot chocolate. I think I am addicted.
  4. am going to do my Pilates DVD today. No excuses. Even if I can’t leave the yard to walk or jog or ride the bike, and even if there are no local TurboKick classes and gyms, I CAN experience the joys of exercise. :)
  5. I LOVE reading. I collect books because I’m afraid I will run out of books to read someday, and I can’t stand the thought of not having something to read. But I am NOT a librarian type. No. NO. NO! (Sorry, I'm a little sensitive about that today . . . )
I tag people the easy way – the first five people to comment on my post yesterday get tagged today. I would LOVE to hear more of the finer details of your lives:
  1. Kori at See Kori Rant
  2. Baroness Black
  3. Sarah at Tales from Oakbriar Farm
  4. Mama Jil at M is for Mommy
  5. Sheila at Somebody Loved

One Word

No awards to pass on today, but I do have a meme to play with, thanks to The Scholastic Scribe. It is a tough one . . .

The simple rule of thumb is that you have to answer each question with one word, and one word only. So lots of this doesn't make any sense, because I can be a rather wordy person at times. Not intentionally, of course. I always try to get right to the point, of course.

So enough already. Here we go.
  1. Where is your cell phone? Diaper
  2. Where is your significant other? Watch
  3. Your hair color? Notblonde
  4. Your mother? Rose
  5. Your father? Herb
  6. Your favorite thing? Baby
  7. Your dream last night? Cake
  8. Your dream/goal? Joy
  9. The room you’re in? Dining
  10. Your hobby? Reading
  11. Your fear? Phone
  12. Where do you want to be in 6 years? Paradise
  13. Where were you last night? Sister’s
  14. What you’re not? Blind
  15. One of your wish-list items? Decor
  16. Where you grew up? Hempstead
  17. The last thing you did? Beach
  18. What are you wearing? Watch
  19. Your TV? Broken

Business

Hope everyone is having a happy weekend! We’ll be posting photos tomorrow of the non-birthday get-together on Friday, but today we’ve got a few items of business to attend to.

First, thank you to Lori at Teacher Turned Mommy for passing on the Bloggy Goodness Award! I love reading about Lori’s gorgeous kiddies – Blake and Colby. It always amazes me that a mom can survive with a baby not all much older than Esmé and take care of a newborn, too – people like you are my heroes!

Now I get to pick 3 blogs from the dozens of excellent ones to pass this award on to. So I’m hereby passing this on to:
  • Angie at 7 Clown Circus. Not just for making me jealous with photos of her romantic vacation, or for having some of the cutest kids out there, but also for being real on her blog.

  • Kathy at Kathy Likes Pink. For making me laugh, for some gorgeous photos in her posts, and for the pink brightness I get every time I view her blog.

  • Nell at Casual Friday Everyday. It’s fun watching the belly grow! Plus I appreciate the constant reminder to enjoy the moment – these mommy moments pass by so quickly!

Second, I got tagged by Jen at One Mom’s World to share six random things about my life right now.

We’ll start with six random things about Esmé:

  1. She is 16 months old today!

  2. She has 13 teeth and three just ready to burst any second.

  3. She is ambidextrous – she eats, colors, and throws ball with both hands.

  4. Her favorite color seems to be pink, if evidenced by the color of markers she prefers to draw with.

  5. She has a gazillion stuffed monkeys.

  6. She’s a water baby – she was born in the water and still loves it!

Now six random things about Esmé’s mommy:

  1. I haven’t lost a Boggle game yet (except the online version, but I’m sure the winners use a computer program or something to get their winning scores).

  2. I can’t swim.

  3. I like white water rafting. I went on a 2-man inflatable kayak with my husband the day after I found out I was pregnant with Esmé, and we tipped over – my first time ever tipping over. All that training kept me calm as I told myself to relax and let my life jacket do the work. It did – I came up under the overturned kayak and couldn’t get air. Then the training kept me calm as I told myself to “walk” to the end of the boat (of course I took the long route) – and finally I got air! And I hung on the boat all the way through the rapids. It was only after I was all safe and sound that I panicked.

  4. I am an out-of-practice flautist.

  5. I’ve always worked in accounting or information systems. Right now I handle the finances for our Africa project. When I took the Myers-Briggs test for my company a few years ago, though, it surprised everyone by showing that I was a frustrated artist. I think orchestra conductor was at the top of my occupation list. Unfortunately, being an artist takes talent as well as personality . . . If I could choose today what I would be when I grow up, I would probably choose something in social work. Or I’d be a midwife. Or I'd read books for a living.

  6. The kitchen is an area my OCD shows up in full force. I either am in the middle of cooking a dozen recipes or can't handle the thought of cooking at all.

So, all awardees – consider yourselves tagged and pass on the award if you so choose. And get out and have some fun before the weekend is over!
