Esmé's Mommy here...This issue has been bugging me, so I decided to join up with An Island Life and ask a simple question today.
Do you prefer to tumble dry your clothes, or hang them out to dry?
Most people in the US tumble dry their clothes, but they talk nostalgically about the fresh-smelling sheets of years of yore that waved in the breeze to dry. If only they had the time and the space, they say.
But personally, having done the hang out to dry thing, I prefer my sheets nice and warm and smelling of fabric softener fresh from the dryer. Those air-dried things are stiff and wrinkled in comparison, not to mention all the work involved.
Admittedly, tumble dryers might be a waste of energy. But that's all I'll grant you.
So what do you HONESTLY prefer?

I tumble dry everything but the nice shirts, pants, and shorts. I hang them up inside the house.
I am probably one of those people who romanticize line drying my clothes. I couldn't now if I wanted to of course, but when I lived 'in the country' I could have but didn't.
Oh well, it would probably be too hard to do that with 2 little ones anyway!
i've never tried the line drying method...though when i was a kid i remember our house helpers in indonesia air dried our clothes. i read somewhere that the reason the clothes are stiff is b/c we add too much soap in the wash. hmmm...maybe so, but like you i think i prefer sticking them in the dryer :)
I HONESTLY prefer line-dried--so much so that whenever we visit my parents in the summer, I bring all my sheet to wash, just so I can hang them outside and get them smelling so fresh and clean. And I've never noticed anything that I hang outside coming in stiff, but that's probably because there's ALWAYS a wind at my parents' house. Plus I find hanging out laundry weirdly fun.
However, my sister, who shares a house with my parents, is saving up money for a dryer, because besides the obvious problems of trying to dry things in the winter, she doesn't like clothespin marks on her clothes, and apparently she's had to deal once or twice with having to clean bird poop off a nice shirt.
So maybe if I didn't have the option of a dryer, I would suddenly find myself missing it more.
I put everything in the dryer. We are not allowed to hang clothing outside where i live, even if I wanted to.
Can you say Bounce dryer bar? I am a dryeraholic!!

Wow! I am staggered you guys choose this as an either/or. Everyone I know line dries their clothes as soon as they can in the spring, through until it's too dark and wet to be worth while. The winters are mostly spent drying clothes over radiators or bannisters, or in bathrooms. Some of us have tumble dryers, or washer dryers but I think most of us put off using them unless you REALLY have to. Partly because they're so bad for the environment, but mostly just because they cost so much to run!
I honestly hadn't realised that there were people on a sunny, breezy day who still preferred to use a tumble dryer!
My dryer is broken and not been replaced. I line dry everything all year round. In the winter or wet days I hang in the basement.
i hate the stiffness of line dried stuff.
If you use a liquid fabric softener, line dried clothes don't get stiff-including jeans. I only use my dryer when the laundry has eihter piled up so high that the bottom of the pile has clothes that no longer even FIT anyone anymore (really. nobisy wears a size two ANYTHING anymore!) or after the first hard freeze.
I don't think I've ever hung anything. My clothes go right from the washer to the dryer.
Tumble dry, definiitely. Line drying is as overrated as candle light and buggies.
Line dried! The only things that get stiff are the towels and the soften up after one use. I don't even use fabric softener, just vinegar instead of liquid softener.
I do a little bit of both.
My grandmother (who raised me) line dried everything (she hated dryers) and while the clothes did smell great that way it wasn't much fun hauling heavy baskets of wet clothes up and down stairs (not to mention the hill to get to the line). So I would probably opt to use the dryer, unless the line to hang things on was easy to get to :-)
Line Dry? What?? I barely have the time / take the time to do laundry - let alone line dry!! :)
I can't say which I honestly prefer because I have only ever thrown clothes in the dryer!
I have done a whole lot of line drying over the years... but its been a dryer for at least ten years or more.
I prefer the dryer. Softness is key.

I wish I had better weather to hang dry all my clothes ( and a long clothesline) I love the fresh air smell of line dried clothes. I love the energy savings....but I don't like how if it is too humid/not windy or sunny enough/too cloudy my clothes won't dry before it gets dark....so drying in the dryer is easier and that is what I do. If the weather is amazing I'll hang my clothes outside though - plus, the sun bleaches out stains! yay!!
Does it count if you hang them indoors? I use this wooden drying rack that has found a great spot right under my ceiling fan. The air movement keeps the clothes from getting crunchy.
If I had some outdoor lines - I would dry some things out there.
But I just don't have the energy to shake out all the "hardness"
