I confess – I am a fan of 80s/90s music. I’m not too fond of current stuff. I usually skip over music review offers.
I have some lovely nieces, however, who introduced us to One Direction via our karaoke machine on a visit awhile back. So – when I saw One Direction mentioned in the blurb about 1 Girl Nation – and since 6yo Miss Esmé was at the [very low end of] the target range for 1 Girl Nation, I figured we’d at least check out their YouTube videos.
Let’s just say they were an immediate hit with fancy-dancy kidlet. And I found their music rather catchy myself. So Miss Esmé decided to commence on her first video review (below just a bit).
This is music you move to, you sleep to, you wake up to, you drive to. It moves you, inspires you, compels you.
I woke Esmé up with their album one day, figuring it’s never too early to “live for Jesus” and “love like crazy,” and then as we were driving to school, she *made* me turn off the other CD I had been listening to in the car. “I want to remember that 1 Girl Nation song all day! This other song is messing up my memory!” So I’ve just started transporting the CD between the house and the car…
Landing in the space where One Direction meets TobyMac, 1 Girl Nation is an exciting blend of upbeat pop music, with lyrics that are totally focused on living life for God, even while you’re young. 1GN, as they’ve already been dubbed, stars Carmen, Kayli, Kelsey, Lauryn Taylor and Lindsey, five girls with a passion for telling their fans about Christ through their music. Their first single, “While We’re Young,” can be heard on radio stations across the country and their self-titled debut album is available now!
Format: self-titled debut album (10 songs) is available in CD and MP3 format
Primary Audience: preteens, teens, and young adults (as well as parents, too!)
For More Information:
Esmé was excited about doing a video review on this. Unfortunately, her mama is not a talented videographer – so this was a tough assignment for my limited skills and time. You would make this 6yo’s day if you’d have a watch and leave a comment!
Yes, this music is catchy. I love listening to the variety of upbeat songs along with my daughter. These girls are cool. My kid would be one of their biggest groupies if she could.
Mostly, I love the messages Esmé is getting from the songs. There’s not a one I don’t like. One after another, they inspire her to live for Jesus, stand on her knees, love like crazy. And they deliver the message all girls want to hear: “You are beautiful in the eyes of the One Who made you.”
In summary, I think 1 Girl Nation would make an awesome gift for the fun-loving girls in your life, inspiring them to “live for Jesus while [they’re'] young!” And what better message, what better gift, is there than that?
