We discovered this iHeartFaces blog which features contests of face photos every week. And I just had to enter this photo of Mavinga, my Mozambican buddy, taken the day we said goodbye and left Mozambique last month. Gotta love that face!
---------------
For those new to my blog, Mavinga was the 4-year-old son of our gardener in Mozambique. He came to work with his dad every day after his mom was killed by a crocodile.

That is heart wrenching. It's amazing what kids can go through and still have utter joy in life. He looks like such a ray of sunshine. Thanks for sharing this great picture!
What a sweet looking child! I gasped when I read the thing about the crocodile. Oh my gosh!
Priceless. That's a winning smile if I've ever seen one!
That is an amazing face. Especially when you know the story behind the face. Such a small person and such a big smile... and I am sure that his heart is just as big.

I love this photo, he has such a sweet smile :)
I remember you posting about him before. Look at that precious face and beautiful smile!!!
his mom was killed by a crocodile? Oh how awful for them.
precious face!
Mavinga is still doing well. At Christmas we gave him a cool little car to play with while he runs around the yard and sings through the day. His daddy may have traded it for a different car cuz now he has a 4X4 truck he is pulling around. But he is having fun. I am sure he is missing you though, Esme! Your cousins are usually in school and a lot bigger, not as fun as you were. Love, Auntie S
Wow...he is a cutie!!!! And he looks so happy.....hard to believe you are telling him goodbye that day!!!
how sweet.
The face of an African boy, soon to grown into a young African man, who will still dare to smile, despite the hardships on the continent. That is the generosity of the African spirit....
...a beautiful one indeed.
