Dear Miss Esmé,
You are cunning conniving clever.
Actually, C was supposed to be for cat’s meow, but you insisted that you were rather the dog’s arf-arf. Which doesn’t begin with C. So I had to come up with something else quick.
Note: Not-so-longsuffering Cat is quite capable of defending himself against baby hound dog Esmé…
Does it come as any surprise that your daddy and I think you are brilliant?
It’s nice that you pick up so quickly on the academic stuff. We’re rather chuffed that you are reading a book a night even before you turn five. So yes, you will earn that mermaid Barbie today (and maybe even a Ken so your girls don’t have to take turns playing the part).
But what we love most is that day-to-day interaction where you put your creative cleverness to use. Where you put bits and pieces of information together to logically negotiate the desires of your heart, like that piece of cake at potluck or an extra hour before bedtime. As we shake heads with exasperation, you come up with quotes like this: “Carrying the cross was too hard for Jesus. But He can carry the world in His hands. That means the cross is much bigger than the world!”
And it makes us think – How much more does the Father love us! And doesn’t He smile as he watches us – His creative creation – come up with the zaniest craziest ideas and negotiation tactics as we seek understanding?
Listen, my daughter, to your mamma! LOVE wisdom. Though it cost all you have, seek understanding.
I love you, my amazing, beautiful, clever baby girl!
Your Mom

Each birthday, I write a letter to my baby girl. This year, the year of the amazing 5-year-mark, I’ll be working from A to Z.
