Review: Bailey's Cave Adventures

Let me introduce you to some new buddies of mine! First, there is Bailey, a bat that crashes into everything. See - I helped color him!
And there's Radar the dog, Millie the Millipede, Greta Glowworm, and Beatrice the fish, who is blind. While Mommy reads stories and Bible verses about them, I get to help them act the stories out...
We got to go "spelunking!" We made a cave out of blankets and chairs, and I got to use a flashlight in there, and everything!
And I practiced being blind, too. Just like Beatrice. But I bumped into everything like Bailey.
Then I got to eat millipede legs for lunch. OK, you gotta use your imagination a little, but we put shoes on those legs. You could use fruit like bananas and watermelon if you liked, but we used cheese, baked tofu, and olives.

It is time for a FIRST Wild Card Tour book review! If you wish to join the FIRST blog alliance, just click the button. We are a group of reviewers who tour Christian books. AND NOW...THE FIRST CHAPTER:

Bailey’s Cave Adventures

Video/Puppet Show

Scene 1 – Day 1: Bailey comes flying and crashing into the room. When dust settles, you can see him more clearly.

Bailey: “Hi boys and girls, my name is Bailey, and I’m a brown bat. Bet you never saw a bat who was always flying into things! That’s because most bats have sonar. Let me explain what that word means. Bats can see with sound better than light. They send out a sound so high-pitched that human ears can’t hear it! The sound bounces off whatever is in front of them, and comes back to their ears. This happens really fast. That’s how they find food, and keep from flying into things.”

“Well, something went wrong when I was born, and my sonar has never worked! Anyway, it’s okay because my Mom and Dad gave me a seeing-eye dog, you know, the kind blind people use, and he helps me get around, and keeps me from falling, when he’s with me. Sometimes I try to go off on my own and, well, you can imagine. He’s my best friend! Would you like to meet my dog? (Yes!) OK. Here Radar, where are you boy?”

Out from under a curtain Bailey knocked down comes a large black Lab wearing a harness w/handle.

Radar: “I see you’re doing okay, no lumps or bumps? Well, climb on up and grab hold of my harness. I have a few things to tell these boys and girls here.”

Bailey climbs up on Radar’s head, to the harness, hangs onto the handle upside down with a sigh of relief, and falls asleep.

Radar turns to audience and says, “My job is to keep Bailey on the right path, and warn him of danger. Sometimes he listens, other times he goes off on his own without even seeing where he’s going. He has to learn to trust me completely. That’s like what the Holy Spirit does for you. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “ ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.’ ”

Bailey wakes up.

Bailey: “Radar, I almost forgot. While I was out flying”--Radar whispers to the audience, “And crashing”-- “I heard some kids talking about going spelunking, that’s cave exploring, and someone who does that is called a spelunker. Anyway, I was thinking I’d make a great spelunker, and I’ve never been very far into the cave, I could go all the way down to the dark zone! It would be a real adventure!” (Getting excited).

Radar: “Now hold on Bailey, that sounds pretty dangerous to me. I’d feel a lot better if you let me go with you.”

Bailey: “Sure, okay, that’d be fun, who’s going to carry the flashlight?” (Turns to audience). “Could you help us with flashlights boys and girls?” (Yes!) “Great, let’s get ready to go then!”

Mommy's Review

How I wish author Nina Meier was running VBS near my house when I was growing up! Reading through this book, I can just imagine the props and fun she must create!

I ran a little short on time when it came to implementing the many ideas I had while reading this book - so we condensed much of the Bailey adventures into one day - and Esmé had a blast! I've noticed that books with animals always rank highest for her, so this fit right up there. Plus, caves out of blankets are a huge novelty, especially when you equip a kid with a flashlight. We had to rebuild the cave the next day - it makes me wonder why I don't just leave it up all the time. Other than the eyesore it would become... :)

Back to the book. It is meant to be a VBS and Sunday School curriculum, and it's broken up into three parts:

  1. Bailey's Cave Adventures (which is the part we focused on - a great combination of nature lessons and spiritual applications and positive relationships);
  2. Beyond the Norm Bible Stories (stories outside of Noah, Joseph, and Baby Moses... - with suggested props and applications); and
  3. God's Special Plan (the Creation story, with lots of hands-on ideas for discovering God's world)
Now, if you're looking for a VBS kit with all the supplies included, this isn't it. But if you're on a budget, full of creativity, and looking for a fun theme, this is a great place to start! I like that the three sections are all packaged together. If you've got a one-hour program, you could just do the Bailey part (which includes a craft/coloring page and a snack idea), or if you've got a half-day program with lots of kids, you could set up centers that the kids rotate through.

And if you're a mom like me, looking for Bible-based activities for your 2-10yo kid(s), you'll find some ideas here. I felt a little inadequate looking at all the prop ideas - I didn't feel I could justify the time to put together all the props for each story for just one kid! But I'm setting this book aside for when Esmé's attention span is a little longer and we have a schoolhouse built! My hope is to have a Bible center somewhere in that schoolhouse - so we can set up the props for a story and leave them there - maybe a story a week... And who knows - maybe we can get some neighbor kids involved, too!

So, to sum all this up - I think the Bailey's Cave Adventures concept will be a hit with kids everywhere. Some great VBS ideas and skits in this book - but expect to use your creativity and some hard work to pull it together and get things set up!

Thanks, Nina, for sharing your talents and ideas with some of us not-so-creative ones!

Fashion Friday

Welcome to the latest and greatest in kid fashion!

If you've got some great fashion going on in your house, go post your fashion photos of the week, come back and link up, and then grab your sparking grape juice on ice, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

Now this picture here looks like some fun interaction between me and the neighbor cat while on our walk, right?
Nah, it's really a picture of my favorite yellow sparkly "walking" shoes!
Speaking of foot gear, Mommy's bunny slippers have definitely made a comeback amongst 2-year-old fashionistas.
If your Christmas decorations are still out (ours aren't of course!), tinsel garlands make excellent belts for just the sparkling touch. See?
Speaking of Christmas, I've been putting the snowman blanket from Grandma to good use.

See, it's perfectly acceptable to put your pink potty in the middle of the living room to do your business (contrary to adult nightmares). You just need to fully cover yourself with a snowman blanket so no one can see you. Like this:
OK, folks, here's where you get to share the catwalk! Link up your favorite fashion shot(s) of the week...

Homeschool Resources

Esmé's Mommy here...

It's 5:40 a.m., and I just discovered Head of the Class! I've been looking for an online curriculum to try out with Esmé - and this is FREE and absolutely perfect so far!

I've signed up for the Preschooler level to start with. There's a 149-page ebook with a list of "objectives" and the teaching process for each. There are lots of printables and online activities incorporated into it.

Most of it is stuff she can already do, but it's FUN, and I like the idea of running through the list of objectives and covering all the bases before moving on to the next level. It's not just stuff like knowing the alphabet, but also things like neatly feeding herself, stirring a bowl without spilling, building a structure (with Lincoln Logs, etc.), and balancing on one leg.

Esmé is showing signs of kindergarten readiness in some areas of reading, writing, and math, so I'm thrilled with this holistic approach to measuring progress on all levels. This won't be replacing our Itty Bitty Bookworm curriculum - nothing can replace BOOKS! But it's an exciting addition, and it's FREE!

Here's another resource - still in test phase - that we're trying out: readingk-3. We're starting to work through the /t/ sound, which is perfect because T is one of our letters this month with IBB. Esmé is starting to understand putting letters together to make words - we're not pushing her, but I do want to help her out, and I love the synthetic phonics approach. Just hoping this gets out of test mode before we're ready to move on to the next letter!

We've also started checking out phonics videos from the library. We only watch them at Esmé's request - which is quite frequent! Her favorites right now are Between the Lions videos.

Not to neglect the spiritual side of things, I've been considering incorporating hymns into our curriculum, too. I love this Hymns for Kids site with sheet music and accompaniment tracks! I haven't bought the book yet (Hymns for a Kid's Heart), but it's on my wish list.

Do I have to do a disclaimer if this post is purely from excitement of discovering something new? No one has contacted me to do reviews, and I'm not getting anything more out of this than you can... :)

Tot School

This was kind of a mixed up week, since Mommy had ordered the wrong book for the week and we didn't get the right one (from the library) until it was over... But basically, the theme was snow, snowmen, and wild animals.

We had TONS of books:
With all the Bambi DVD watching and book reading, it's a wonder that we did anything else, huh?! Here are some of the things we did.

First, Mommy bought me a set of wild forest animals (from Michaels). So every time we read Annie and the Wild Animals, I would bring out the corresponding little animal to act his part.
In that book, Annie feeds the animals corn cakes. So I made some corn cake, too. Only no wild animals got any of it!
I DID make some pine cone bird feeders, though. First I spread peanut butter on the pine cones...
And then I sprinkled birdseed on the peanut butter!
Mommy put a snowflake doily on a paper plate, and I painted all over the doily onto the plate.
Then I took the doily off and put it on a clean white plate. Now I had two identical snowflakes - only one was blue on white and one was white on blue!

I matched colored scarves to snowmen with the same-colored hats.

We did the traditional Do-A-Dot page - an "O" since that was one of my letters this month, and an owl since it was a wild animal in the book of the week.
And I used Do-a-Dots on a counting worksheet. There were six circles next to each number on the sheet, and I stamped the correct amount of circles for each number. Easy peasy! Mommy didn't even have to help AT ALL. (Worksheet from childcareland - sign up for their free daily email if you want in on these...)
And I played Snowman BINGO! Mommy called letters as she drew them from a stack of alphabet flashcards, and I had to see if I had those letters on my paper (a page of snowmen with letters handwritten on them). If I did, I stamped the letter. We kept playing to I had stamped ALL my letters!

We practiced counting with a spinner. I had a foam snowman kit, and the idea was that I could spin and put on the amount of pieces of the number I spun, and then it was Mommy's turn. It got a little crazy, though.

We made a snowman with two English muffin halves, cream cheese, dried blueberries for eyes, a baby carrot for a nose, candy rocks for the mouth, a fruit roll-up for the scarf, and candy for the buttons! Yummy! I ate ALL the candy parts.

I moved my little wild animals through the scenes of Robert Sabuda's Winter's Tale: An Original Pop-up Journey pop-up book! That book is REALLY cool!

We made a BIG snowman on blue posterboard, using three different-sized doilies. Then I painted snow on the sides with my brush and qtips.

I had the bright idea of making animal tracks with the white paint, too! It looks pretty cool - like lots of snow flakes. Here's the finished snowman.
I matched up pictures of animals to their tracks! This was pretty easy for me - I didn't even use the words at the bottom of the cards to help me out.
We made "snow" play dough. We mixed in glitter and peppermint extract just to add to the excitement. Then I made a snowman, all by myself! With toothpick arms and a bead for a nose. And a tiny ball for a hat.
I also made animal tracks in the snow play dough with my little wild animals.
I played in shaving cream "snow" again! And wrote a few letters in it.
And I am still very much in love with my scissors. Mommy dried to get me to do a holly craft with holly leaves and red pompoms, but I cut up the background paper instead of gluing everything to it.

Here are a couple of crafts I did at day care that week! First a paper plate cow - pretty cute, huh?!
And cotton ball cows grazing on a field of grass...
